Synthetic Humans have no Depth
ACHAL SHAH
Project Description
"Synthetic Humans Have No Depth" is an artistic investigation and research of the algorithmic process of constructing lifelike figures inside computers known as deepfakes. They are seen as the next step in the propagation of false information, furthering the process of deceiving viewers not just through texts and images, but also through convincing recordings of people with their faces substituted in circumstances in which they were never present. Lynchings have occurred in India as a result of false information being disseminated on Whatsapp and people choosing to accept it, the worry is that if deepfakes are released again, and people are not accustomed to such techniques, the problem may reoccur, as it did during the fake-news era. The project concept is to focus on the larger component of information sharing by learning to build a deepfake, which can subsequently be used to spread awareness of the existence of such methods among audiences.

Achal Shah is a Toronto-based interactive and audiovisual artist that creates multi-modal installations and experiences. Achal's work is oriented on human experiences and their subjectivity, and it exists at the intersection of art, narrative, and technology. He experiments with coding, sensors, real-time data, science, and music to bridge the real and fictional worlds around us.
He is also interested in examining how this newer method of cognitive autonomous computational creativity will determine the future of artists within the community, based on the current trends of autonomous algorithmic processes being integrated into the art environment.
