Project Description
Trends Towards Piety is a thesis exploration into discursive artifacts that situate multiple perspectives of Muslimah (Muslim women) identity. The stories told are mainly centered on personal experiences of young, hijab-wearing urban Indonesian women. These perspectives are implemented through use of democratised new media technology, such as MAR (Mobile Augmented Reality) and digital games. The two artifacts, 'Cergam Muslimah' and 'Aisha' are prototypes that reimagine more nuanced forms to situate expressions of identity. 'Cergam Muslimah' consists of three Augmented Reality Zines, while 'Aisha' is a personal game that follows a hijabi player character. These prototypes propose alternatives to self-representational practice by introducing themes and methods that are largely unexplored for Muslim women in Indonesian and Western popular culture. With intentions to critique Orientalism in shaping the images and insights of Muslimah, the discursive nature of these artifacts reflect possibilities in furthering creative practice beyond its current dominant presence on Instagram.
