Drawing light in the cave
a framework for hand-rendered visual art experiences in virtual reality
Catherine Reyto
Project Description
Creative VR applications have opened new ways of artmaking inside a three-dimensional environment. With the hand-held use of responsive controllers, creators are able to work intuitively, extending the potential motor-sensory expression in gesture form. The investigation involves a mixed-method approach, where autoethnographic methods examine theories about art and technology, representational drawing, human optics and 3D graphics through an iterative, practice-led study of techniques. The concepts behind traditional art principles are challenged as to whether they can be evolved and adapted using hand-held tools in virtual 3D graphics. The results of this research culminate in a framework of themes that provides key aspects of VR art, emphasizing the agency and subjective expression of creators in the experience of making. In doing so, a foundation is provided for projects that can ultimately be shared with audiences as navigable environments.
