Project Description

The sense of smell is one of the most powerful human senses, capable of evoking deep emotional responses, triggering vivid memories, and influencing moods. Perfumes leverage the olfactory system to create personalized and meaningful experiences, where a single scent can transport someone to a past moment, recall a loved one, or elicit entirely new emotions. As a result, the perfume industry thrives on crafting scents that engage not just the nose, but also the heart and mind. However, in an increasingly multisensory design landscape, a key question emerges: Can the emotional impact of scent be extended or replicated through other sensory stimuli?

This research explores how scent evokes emotional responses and examines whether similar experiences can be enhanced or recreated through other sensory modalities. While smell is uniquely linked to memory and emotion, a multisensory approach considers how visual, tactile, and auditory stimuli might amplify or complement these effects. By studying the interplay between these senses, this research seeks to uncover new strategies for designing immersive, emotionally resonant products that extend beyond traditional olfactory experiences.

Feeling Scents, an interactive installation developed as part of this study, examines how humans engage with multisensory elements. The installation incorporates smell, touch, sight, and sound to create a holistic sensory experience, demonstrating how different modalities can work together to shape perception and emotional response.
